AT&T offering new LG X120 3G netbook at a “discount”

AT&T is adding a new netbook to their “discounted” with a data plan option. They recently started offering the HP Mini 110 for $199 (with a $60/month data plan) and now they are going to offer the new LG X120 netbook for $179.99 with the same data plan. The netbook is your standard 10.1″, Windows XP, 1GB RAM with 160GB hard drive model.

I hate to break the news to them but if they’re only offering around a $100 discount and you have to pay an extra $60 a month then this a failed business model. Now if they gave them away for free this might tempt a few people to sign up for their $60 a month (5GB max transfer) data plan. But with wifi hotspots everywhere for free now it’s hard to justify the need for roaming data plans.

There are always going to be people that legitimitely need a 3G roaming data plan, but untill the carriers start really subsidizing netbooks the way they do cell phones then I don’t see this plan taking off anytime soon.
