Google Chrome available for download this week?

According to the rumor mill (mainly Techcrunch’s secret “source“) Google Chrome will be available for download sometime soon possibly even this week. This will be a very early beta build and will most likely lack hardware drivers needed to make it run on most machines. It still might run on a few netbooks when released such as the Eee PC (Chrome is made specifically for netbooks after all).

If you aren’t familar with Chrome it is Google’s own custom operating system that is made specifically for netbooks. It is supposed to be fast-booting, small and efficient and be centered around web connectivity. We can guess this means all of Google cool web tools will be built in (Gmail, docs, etc).

When Google first announced Chrome last fall they did say that they would release the source code into the open source community for development “later this year” so this early release would fall in line with their prediction. It will be interesting to see what it actually looks like after all of the fake screenshots that have turned up on the internet lately.
