Which Linux netbook version is best?

If you have decided to run Linux on your desktop (maybe dual boot or just by itself) you have a wide range of choices. Well the site Phoronix ran some tests comparing a few of these choices to decide which one is the best.

The versions tested were Google Chromium OS (alpha), Moblin 2.1, Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, OpenSUSE 11.2 and Fedora 12. They were all loaded on the same netbook, a Samsung NC10.

The performance tests (video playback, encoding, etc) showed little to no differences between the OS’s. Where they did show a difference was in power usage though, and Ubuntu Netbook Remix came out as a clear winner.

This should lead to a longer battery life if you choose this OS, and this is very important for netbooks. Of course the Chromium OS tested was an early alpha build so with tweaked drivers there’s no telling what it will be capable of, but for now the Ubuntu netbook remix was the clear winner.
