AMD to release their own “Atom” chip in 2011

AMD is a little late to the game, but it looks like next year they’re going to have a new chip in their “Fusion” lineup that will compete with Intel’s Atom chip. They have a few low power chips in netbooks such as the MV-40, but battery life on these is definitely sub-par. This will change in 2011 with their new chip, whatever it may be called.

bobcatThis new chip will no doubt be from their announced “bobcat” series of low power chips aimed at netbooks. The Bobcat processor will only use around 1W of power and combined with a GPU will still only use around 10-15W.

This new chip will also be able to handle HD video with ease, something we’re not used to with Atom processors. Even with this new chip it will be hard to overtake Intel so late in the game, but we’ll see next year.
