Mobinova Beam gets the Android OS

The last time we saw the Mobinova Beam smartbook it was running a custom OS built on Windows CE. Well the folks at Laptopmag got their hands on a pre-production model and were pleasantly surprised to see it running on Google’s Android OS.

The physical layout remains unchanged except for a few extra playback buttons on the keyboard. It still has the HDMI out port on the back behind a hinged flap, but it also still has the Tegra chipset for HD video playback. Here are the specs:

  • Processor: ARM Cortex A9
  • Graphics: Nvidia Tegra 2
  • 12 hours battery life (estimated)
  • 802.11 b/g wifi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • integrated UMTS/HSPA (850/1900/2100)
  • display: 8.9″ 1024 x 600

Even though it has the Android OS Mobinova says that it will not have access to the Android marketplace, but they’re working on their own app store.

They did say that they’ll include some graphically intensive games to showcase the Tegra’s capabilities but no word on which ones they will include. Look for the Mobinova Beam to be available sometime this summer and subsidized through AT&T (=cheaper price).
