Trying to decide which netbook to buy? There are many choices out there and you first need to consider what aspect of a netbook is most important to you. Is it price, performance, or quality?

If your main consideration is an equal blend of all 3, then you will be the most satisfied with the Asus Eee PC 1005HA.

This netbook has remained the number 1 best-seller for half of 2009, and that’s because it does almost everything right. Its build quality is excellent and the price is very affordable at around $349 with Windows 7 (or $324 for Windows XP). Here are the specs on the 10.1″ Asus Eee PC 1005HA:

10.1″ 1024 x 600 resolution LED backlit LCD display

10.5 hours battery life

Intel Atom N280 processor

250GB hard drive

1GB RAM

Windows 7

802.11 b/g/n wifi

2.9lbs

You can read my full review here, but we’ll just say that there’s a reason it has been the number 1 best-seller for so long. If you’re looking for a good 10.1″ netbook then this is what you want.

I would definitely recommend getting one with Windows 7, but if you want to save some money you can pick up one with Windows XP for only $324 from Amazon.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

If performance is what you’re after then look no further than the HP Mini 311.

This netbook has an 11.6″ display and blows other netbooks out of the water with its Nvidia Ion HD graphics capabilities. Even with all of this performance the price is still only $399. You can check out my full review here, but if performance is what you want then the HP Mini 311 is the best of the best right now. Playing graphics intensive games with this netbook is no problem.

If the lowest price is what you’re after, then take a look at these deals on Amazon.

If you look at remanufactured models as well you can get a great deal on an Asus Eee PC 1005HA for as low as $248. Even though they’re remanufactured they still come with a 90 day warranty so you don’t have anything to worry about.

Remember to subscribe through RSS, twitter or facebook to keep up with the latest netbook news and updates.

You can also browse through our netbook reviews, news, and extensive netbook database for your own comparisons.

Windows 7 has some cool new keyboard shortcuts that can really make your life alot easier. Here is the full list:

Win+Home: Clear all but the active window.

Win+Space: All windows become transparent so you can see through to the desktop.

Win+Up arrow: Maximize the active window.

Shift+Win+Up arrow: Maximize the active window vertically.

Win+Down arrow: Minimize the window/Restore the window if it’s maximized.

Win+Left/Right arrows: Dock the window to each side of the monitor.

Shift+Win+Left/Right arrows: Move the window to the monitor on the left or right.

You can also interact with windows by dragging them with the mouse:

Drag window to the top: Maximize

Drag window left/right: Dock the window to fill half of the screen.

Shake window back/forth: Minimize everything but the current window.

Double-Click Top Window Border (edge): Maximize window vertically.

Taskbar Shortcuts

In Windows 7, using the Windows key along with the numbers 1-9 will let you interact with the applications pinned to the taskbar in those positions – for example, the Windows key + 4 combination would launch Outlook in this example, or Win+Alt+4 can be used to get quick access to the Outlook Jump List from the keyboard.

You can use any of these shortcut combinations to launch the applications in their respective position on the taskbar, or more:

Win+number (1-9): Starts the application pinned to the taskbar in that position, or switches to that program.

Shift+Win+number (1-9): Starts a new instance of the application pinned to the taskbar in that position.

Ctrl+Win+number (1-9): Cycles through open windows for the application pinned to the taskbar in that position.

Alt+Win+number (1-9): Opens the Jump List for the application pinned to the taskbar.

Win+T: Focus and scroll through items on the taskbar.

Win+B: Focuses the System Tray icons

In addition, you can interact with the taskbar using your mouse and a modifier key:

Shift+Click on a taskbar button: Open a program or quickly open another instance of a program.

Ctrl+Shift+Click on a taskbar button: Open a program as an administrator.

Shift+Right-click on a taskbar button: Show the window menu for the program (like XP does).

Shift+Right-click on a grouped taskbar button: Show the window menu for the group.

Ctrl+Click on a grouped taskbar button: Cycle through the windows of the group.

More Useful Hotkeys You Should Know

The new hotkey goodness didn’t stop with the taskbar and moving windows around—one of the best new hotkeys in Windows 7 is the fact that you can create a new folder with a hotkey. Just open up any Windows Explorer window, hit the Ctrl+Shift+N shortcut key sequence, and you’ll be rewarded with a “New Folder” ready for you to rename.

Here’s a few more interesting hotkeys for you:

Ctrl+Shift+N: Creates a new folder in Windows Explorer.

Alt+Up: Goes up a folder level in Windows Explorer.

Alt+P: Toggles the preview pane in Windows Explorer.

Shift+Right-Click on a file: Adds Copy as Path, which copies the path of a file to the clipboard.

Shift+Right-Click on a file: Adds extra hidden items to the Send To menu.

Shift+Right-Click on a folder: Adds Command Prompt Here, which lets you easily open a command prompt in that folder.

Win+P: Adjust presentation settings for your display.

Win+(+/-): Zoom in/out.

Win+G: Cycle between the Windows Gadgets on your screen.

If you know of any more shortcuts let me know and I’ll add them to the list.

Don’t have Windows 7 yet? Get it here for $188, you won’t regret it. If you do, then here are the steps to install Windows 7 on your netbook using a USB jump drive:

First, you’ll need to have DiskPart installed on the system you will use to prep the thumb drive. This is a free disk partitioning utility that is usually already installed on your Windows system. If not, you can download DiskPart here.

Launch the DiskPart utility by typing diskpart at the Start Menu.

Type list disk to check the status of your drive.

Now type select disk 1 where the “1″ is actually the corresponding number of your USB drive.

Type clean.

Once the thumb drive is clean, you can type create partition primary.

Now make the partition active by typing active

Then type format fs=fat32 quick

Type assign to give the USB drive a drive letter.

Now you can copy everything from the Windows 7 installation DVD onto the USB key (a simple drag and drop will do).

Now simply insert the thumb drive into the system you want to install Windows 7 onto and boot the system. The installation will now proceed as usual—but faster.

I’m going to keep this post simple. The most frequent question I’ve been asked lately (and I assume this will continue until Christmas) is, “what is the best netbook for the money?”

Well here you go, 2 answers. The first is the best netbook for $339 and it is the Asus Eee PC 1005HA with Windows 7 (read my full review here). This netbook has been the number 1 best-seller for many months now and for good reason. It is everything you could want in a 10.1″ netbook and at a great price. With the new Windows 7 already installed this is definitely the way to go, not only because of the OS but they also bumped the hard drive up to 250GB. It’s available in black, blue, white, or pink.

The second choice is if you’re looking for a little beefier netbook then the new dual core Acer 1410 is the best bang for your buck. It features a dual core Pentium (1.2GHz x 2) processor along with 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive, Windows 7, 11.6″ screen, and much more. It runs about $399 which is very good considering everything you get. You can read my full review here.

If one of these netbooks doesn’t do it for you then check out my reviews section for all of my other reviews, or browse the database.

Fidohub has your answer and it will cost you $96. They have a solderless “easy and fun” touchscreen kit for your netbook. It is a resistave touchscreen (not capacitive like the iphone) but nontheless is pretty cool.

It supports Mac, Windows, and Linux so anyone can use it, and another interesting feature is it has 3 extra usb 2.0 ports on the screen. They say these are for “future upgrades” but no word yet as to what these will be. I’m sure some hackers will come up with a use for them before too long.

Their kit include the following:

Touch Screen Panel

Touch-Hub Controller Board by EETI

Multi-Function Stylus

HUB Harness x 1

Camera Harness x 1

USB Harness x 2

Shock Absorber Rubber x 4

Rubber Insulation adhesive x 1

Quick Installation Guide

Driver CD

Surprisingly enough it doesn’t look too complicated and shouldn’t take over an hour to complete. You just take the computer apart and swap the screens, that’s it. And then load some drivers, of course.

Their manual is straight forward and should be real easy to follow, it’s available here for download.

Step 2: turn off computer and remove battery.

Step 3: remove access door to memory (mine had a small picture of a ram stick on the door).

Step 4: push 2 small metal tabs away from memory stick

This will cause the memory stick to pop up:

Step 5: pull out 1GB memory stick and replace with 2GB stick. Make sure the pins are lined up (it will only go in one way). The Crucial sticker is on the bottom.

Step 6: Push RAM down until metal clips click, replace cover, re-insert battery and boot up computer. If you’re running XP then it will auto-recognize the RAM and no other steps are necessary.

Step 7: Once the computer is booted up hit (windows key+Pause) to bring up the system properties box and check to make sure that the new memory is recognized.

If it does then you’re done, if not you will need to re-boot while hitting F8 repeatedly to bring up the bios, then select the new RAM from the menu to make the computer recognize it. Enjoy.

If you have started looking at upgrading the RAM in your netbook to 2GB then you have probably looked around at some forums and read user reviews and found that you are more confused now than when you started.

You might have seen terms like cl, 667 or 800MHz and non-ECC that made you wonder which type of memory that you needed. Well these numbers are all very important, and only certain ones are compatible with your netbook. The best-selling and highest rated netbook memory is the Crucial 2GB stick so I’ll adress that particular brand, but this applies to all brands.

The first thing that you should know is that almost all modern netbooks (well 95% of them including Asus, Acer, etc) use the Atom processor which has a front-side bus speed of 667MHz (for the N280, the N270 is 533MHz). This is where the memory has to travel through in order for the processor to use it. This tells us that even if you get memory that is listed at 800MHz it will not help anything, because in order to use it the computer has to underclock it to 667 (or 533)MHz and some computers don’t like to do this.

Another important thing to make sure is that the RAM you’re looking at is non-ECC, and also of course 200 pin SO-DIMM. This basically just means that it will fit your netbook or laptop.

The third thing we need to look at is CL, or cs latency. This is basically how fast the RAM itself can operate, or the delay time. The lower the cs latency number the better. There are 2 top-selling types of Crucial RAM which you will probably see if you look it up and one is 800MHz with a cl=6 while the other is 667MHz with a cl=5.

Their prices are only a couple of dollars apart and most people would get the 800MHz thinking it is faster, but actually after the computer underclocks it to 667MHz then the second one is faster because it has a smaller cs latency. That is the one I went with and I have had no problems, and I would say around a 50% improvement in speed and apps.

Here’s a benchmark for an Asus Eee PC 901 before and after the upgrade:

Benchmark: 1GB 2GB

Photoshop CS3 test (seconds): 1441 1160

Other programs are similiar in performance increases, and this is definitely one of the best bang-for-the-buck upgrades you can do for your netbook.

Read part 2 of this post for a detailed tutorial of replacing your RAM.
