Today Gateway introduced the Gateway EC14D01h netbook in Canada. Actually you could call it an “ultraportable” due to its built-in dvd drive and a high price tag of $579, but it really blurs the line between the two.
LG X300 netbook with unbreakable Gorilla Glass display
We first spotted the LG X300 netbook at the FCC website back in December of last year. Well now this netbook is finally starting to sell in some places (South Korea) so it should be in the US soon. One cool feature is its use of Corning’s Gorilla Glass for the display. This glass is supposedly unbreakable and impervious to impacts. I’ve broken several “unbreakable” things in the past but this stuff may be the real deal (checkout Corning’s Gorilla Glass website here).
New Acer Aspire One AO721 netbook hits FCC site
A new netbook has popped up for testing at the good old FCC site yesterday, the Acer Aspire One AO721. It has several interesting new features including a 3G modem and what appears to be an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It also has a nice textured surface on the top to keep away the fingerprints.
Here are the specs that we can gather from the photos:
- Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
- Ram: up to 4GB
- OS: Windows 7
- Display: 11.6″
- ports: 3 x usb, VGA, HDMI out
- 802.11 b/g/n wifi, 3G hspa wireless

How to change desktop background in Windows 7 starter
Windows 7 starter is the version that ships with most new netbooks nowadays. It is a stripped down version of Windows 7 Home, and among other things doesn’t let you change the desktop wallpaper. Well there’s finally a program that will let you do just that. It’s called StarterBackgroundChanger and is a free program.
Asus Eee PC 1001P- good netbook at a great price
The Asus Eee PC 1001P is now selling for only $290, and that includes an 11 hour battery. The 1001P features the new N450 processor with Intel GMA 3150 graphics and matte finishes all around so you won’t have to worry about fingerprints. It has the same keyboard as the 1005HA which is a joy to type on, and of course comes with Windows 7 and the usual specs.
JooJoo to feature Nvidia Ion and Atom N270 processor
The JooJoo tablet is going to be coming to market here in a few weeks, and before this could happen it had to be approved by the FCC. Luckily they took alot of good pictures of their teardown and put them on their website for us to see. Apparently the JooJoo is going to feature an Nvidia Ion GPU (first generation) along with an N270 processor. This means it should be able to handle most HD video, but that battery life might not be all that great (try 2-4 hours).
AMD to release their own “Atom” chip in 2011
AMD is a little late to the game, but it looks like next year they’re going to have a new chip in their “Fusion” lineup that will compete with Intel’s Atom chip. They have a few low power chips in netbooks such as the MV-40, but battery life on these is definitely sub-par. This will change in 2011 with their new chip, whatever it may be called.
