Case Crown netbook sleeve

Case Crown netbook sleeve

If you’ve just bought a netbook probably the first thing you will want to buy is a carrying case or sleeve. Since netbooks are so small a sleeve is usually the easiest way to go. One important thing many people forget when they buy a sleeve is to make sure it has an outside pocket, otherwise you’ll be carrying the charger and maybe a mouse in your pocket.

Here’s the one I went with, it’s a navy blue faux suede sleeve from Case Crown. It’s very durable and has a nice outside pocket which I can fit my charger cords and a mouse in. If you’re in the market I highly recommend it, especially with its $24 price tag.

Acer preparing Chrome netbook, E-reader and Appstore

Acer preparing Chrome netbook, E-reader and Appstore

Acer has a busy year ahead of them. An executive has told Bloomberg today that they plan to increase their income by 3 percent during the next two years. This is part of their plan to overtake HP and become the world’s largest PC maker by 2013.

Within the next year they plan to launch their own E-reader, a mobile app store, and a netbook that runs Google Chrome OS. This netbook is supposed to launch in the third quarter, and should be very interesting. Hopefully some specs and maybe some pictures will leak before then.

The mobile app store will be based on Google’s Android app store and will provide apps that can be downloaded on their new netbook, as well as Android equipped cellphones. We’ll keep you updated on this news as more comes to light.

Sony Vaio W available for pre-order

Sony Vaio W available for pre-order

Remember the new Sony Vaio W that we spotted at the FCC site in late December? Well it’s finally up for pre-order on Amazon. It’s listed at $479 which seems a little high for a netbook, let’s take a look at the specs:

  • Processor: Intel Atom N450 1.67GHz
  • 10.1″ 1366 x 768 glossy display
  • Intel GMA 3150 graphics
  • 1GB RAM
  • 250GB HD
  • Windows 7 starter
  • 8 hour battery

23

The Vaio W looks like your new standard Pine trail netbook, but the big deal with this one is that the case is made from 20% recycled cd’s. And the included netbook sleeve is made from recycled bottles. Besides being a little better for the environment and having an HD display, there’s really nothing to show for the extra $100 on the price tag.

If you’re in the market for a netbook with the same specs you can easily find one for under $400, but they won’t include a carrying sleeve so tack on an extra $20.

It’s available for pre-order now and should start shipping soon.

Samsung NB30 available now, touchscreen coming soon?

Samsung NB30 available now, touchscreen coming soon?

The Samsung NB30 is Samsung’s new ruggedized netbook featuring the new N450 processor. It has just shown up today on Amazon for $379. This netbook was shown off at CES and the cool part is that you can spill liquids on the keyboard with no ill effects. Besides being semi-waterproof it has a nice fingerprint resistant case and all around nice Samsung characteristics.

Here are the specs on this netbook:

  • Processor: Intel Atom N450 1.67GHz
  • Intel GMA 3150 graphics
  • 160GB hd
  • 1GB RAM
  • 10.1″ 1024 x 600 display
  • Windows 7 starter
  • 802.11 b/g/n wifi
  • 6.5 hr battery
  • $379

Another interesting listing showed up today on a French site (pixmania), where it listed the NB30 with a touchscreen option. It’s listed as pre-order but it could also be mis-labeled so we’ll have to wait and see if this is a real option or not.

Asus Eee Pad tablet pc to launch in June

Asus Eee Pad tablet pc to launch in June

Remember the rumored Asus Eee Pad we told you about, well some more information has surfaced on it. It’s going to feature a 10.1″ capacitive multitouch display (preferably running Windows 7) but possibly a Linux variation, have Nvidia Tegra graphics (most likely not the new version) and will be officially unveiled at Computex in June. It will also be manufactured by Pegratron technology if that interests you.

With Nvidia Tegra inside this tablet it will be able to handle 1080p graphics with ease and will probably include (hopefully) an HDMI out plug.

The high point of this tablet is its price, which is going to be less than $500. We’ll be looking forward to the debut in June.

EROS 10″ tablet pc

EROS 10″ tablet pc

Need some tablet news to hold you over until next Wednesday (Apples tablet debut)? Well here’s a nice little tablet pc from the folks at Shenzhen who bring you all kinds of nice Chinese netbook knockoffs and other random cheap electronics.

This one features a 10.2″ 1366 x 768 resistive touchscreen display along with an N270 processor and Windows XP or 7. It’s capable of 720p video playback but not in sunlight (daylight visibility is terrible).

2

It has the usual 160GB hd with 1GB of RAM (320GB with 2GB options available), and ports include 2 usb, VGA, ethernet, audio in/out and a card reader. The downside is the 3 cell battery which lasts 2.5 hours in XP and only 1.5 with Windows 7. This basically renders the tablet unusable as a tablet unless you’re by a power outlet.

If you have around $440 to blow and can’t wait for something better than you can get one here.

Daytime visiblity shot (yes the screen is turned on).

Samsung N150 available now

Samsung N150 available now

The Samsung N150 with the new Pine Trail processor is available now. It’s listed as preorder on Amazon but has started shipping from buy.com and a few others.

The N150 is a good all-around netbook and features the new “standard” hardware:

  • Processor: Intel Atom N450 1.67GHz
  • 1GB DDR2 ram, up to 2GB
  • 160GB hd
  • 10.1″ glossy display, 1024 x 600
  • Intel GMA 3150 graphics
  • up to 7 hours battery life
  • Windows 7 starter
  • available in blue, black or red

The N150 has a nice chiclet style keyboard and decent battery life, though some other Pine Trail netbooks have up to 14 hour batteries so 7 hours isn’t too impressive, but it’s decent.

The price is $349 so it’s a pretty good value as well. Here are some pics snapped of the N150 at CES.
