Asus to reveal “killer product” in June

Asus to reveal “killer product” in June

It looks like our earlier info leak back in January was correct because Asus Chairman Jonney Shih has just said that the company is preparing a “killer product” to launch in June, probably during the Computex show in Taiwan. He doesn’t give any more details but the rumor is it’s their tablet device (the Eee Pad) that is will sport the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset and possibly run on the Google Android OS.

The Eee Pad was first spotted at CES 2010 although no specs were detailed. It was simply referred to as the “Asus Tablet Concept” along with a placeholder saying that it is powered by a Nvidia Tegra chip. The news came as Asus announced it will be spinning off its Pegatron manufacturing arm. The device is said to be manufactured by Pegatron and be launched at a sub-$500 price point. If true, the Apple iPad may have even more competition in the second half of this year.

Here’s a look at the tablet at CES:

Mobinnova Beam smartbook hands-on

Mobinnova Beam smartbook hands-on

Remember the Mobinnova Beam smartbook we told you about awhile ago? It features Nvidia’s new Tegra 2 chipset and will allow for HD video and all day battery life. Well our buddies over at Slashgear found the new smartbook at Nvidia’s booth at CES and got a hands on demo.

They describe the operation as very smooth and fast (it’s a custom UI built on Windows CE) and the Tegra 2 has no problem with hi-def videos. An HDMI port is included for outputting HD videos to a tv or monitor.

When the Beam is launched later this year it’s going to be offered exclusively through AT&T (it has built in 3G) and should come at a fairly cheap subsidized price. Here are the full specs:

  • Processor: ARM Cortex A9
  • Graphics: Nvidia Tegra 2
  • 12 hours battery life (estimated)
  • 802.11 b/g wifi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • integrated UMTS/HSPA (850/1900/2100)
  • display: 8.9″ 1024 x 600

Nvidia Tegra 2 coming in Jan

Nvidia Tegra 2 coming in Jan

Nvidia Tegra is a mobile architecture that powers things such as the Zune HD and other small mobile devices. Well Nvidia is planning the Tegra 2 which will be twice as fast as the current version and will feature a dual-core Cortex A9 CPU.

They’re going to give us a sneek peak of this badboy at CES in january, and we’ll see it in devices such as the next-gen Nintendo DS, Zune HD 2, and netbooks of course (remember the mobinnova smartbook).

This new architecture will be fast enough for HD video and depending on the processor should be able to handle most computing tasks. And because of the mobile architecture it will also lead to increased battery life, just what we need in our netbooks.

If you thought the Intel Atom was small and energy efficient, take a look at this.

As you can see the Tegra is 10 times more energy efficient, and also about that much smaller.
